Upon first glance, the Samsung Brightside looks a lot like a midrange, keyboarded smartphone. At $99.99, it's priced like one too. But the Brightside is actually just an overly ambitious feature?phone. It pairs a nice slide-out keyboard with a responsive touch screen and decent call quality. That's the bright side. Unfortunately, the phone's display looks terrible from any angle other than straight on, the camera is poor, the video camera is worse, and multimedia support is spotty. While it may be a decent choice for some, you'll probably be happier with either a simpler phone or a smartphone.

Design and Call Quality
The Brightside measures 4.4 by 2.4 by 0.6 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.3 ounces. It's made entirely of black plastic, with a coarsely textured back panel. There's a volume rocker on the upper left side of the phone, as well as lock and camera buttons on the right side. Aside from those, there are four function keys located beneath the phone's screen. At first, the 3.1-inch, 320-by-240-pixel capacitive display looks decent. It's a good size, and feels nice and responsive. But nearly every time I flipped open the keyboard, I accidentally pressed the phone's camera button or activated the voicemail. You can probably get around that with practice.

The Samsung Brightside is a dual-band EV-DO Rev 0 (850/1900 MHz) device with no Wi-Fi. Voice quality is pretty good. Voices sound clear and very loud in the phone's earpiece, though they lack depth and richness. On the other end, calls made with the phone sound a little robotic but clear and feature average noise cancellation. The speakerphone sounds fine and is just loud enough for outdoor use. Calls also sounded fine through a Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset ($129, 4.5 stars), and the Nuance-powered voice dialing worked well over Bluetooth. Battery life was average at 5 hours and 25 minutes of talk time.

Interface and Apps
The Brightside has a simple, clean interface, though it could benefit from some customizability. The home screen consists of 12 icons, with a launchpad at the bottom of the screen for your contacts, number dialer, recent calls, and voicemail. While I like this layout, it's limited. To listen to music or watch a video, for instance, you need to tap through to the Media Center, then choose Pictures and Video, then choose Videos. If you watch a lot of videos, it would've been nice to have the option of replacing an icon on the home screen with a shortcut to the videos menu.

Aside from the physical camera button on the right side of the phone, if you want to take a photo you first need to choose My Pictures, and then find the small Camera button buried in the right corner of the screen. The option to place a camera button on the home screen would've been much easier. Or maybe I'm just reviewing too many smartphones lately. That complaint aside, I found the Brightside relatively easy to navigate.

MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. ? In the midst of planning a complicated drawdown in forces, the Marine Corps? three-star manpower chief received startling news: He had cancer.

Not just any cancer, either. Lt. Gen. Robert Milstead, deputy commandant of manpower and reserve affairs, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that could spread and kill him if it wasn?t treated quickly. He received the news in January after a battery of tests that began in November with his annual physical, he said. The score on his prostate-specific antigen blood test, or PSA, had increased in the previous year, raising the prospect that something was wrong.

?Once they told me ?you?ve got cancer,? I said ?whoa,? ? Milstead said. ?The C-word can be intimidating. The range of options goes from denial to acceptance, and I think I was able to jump pretty quickly up to, ?OK, I?ve got cancer. How am I going to deal with this?? ?

Milstead, 60, is far from alone. One in six men will get prostate cancer, and one in 33 will die from it, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Recovery frequently depends on a key factor that worked in Milstead?s favor: early detection.

The general described his emotional diagnosis and recovery during an interview here March 21, just weeks after undergoing surgery Feb. 28 to remove his prostate, a gland that is part of the male reproductive system. He did so hoping to raise awareness about the benefits of annual physicals and regular screening. He?d sought the latter because both his father and paternal grandfather also had been treated for the disease.

?This is a huge fraternity,? he said. ?You?ve got a better chance as a man of getting prostate cancer than you do as a female of getting breast cancer. It?s not a club I ever wanted to join, but I?m a card-carrying member now.?

The toughest days

Milstead, a career helicopter pilot, acknowledged it weighed on him when his PSA score raised flags. Initially, he was given medication in case he had an infection, but after several weeks, his PSA number had spiked again. His doctor suggested a biopsy be conducted at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Bethesda, Md.

?I?m like, ?Oh man. Nothing good ever happens in the urology department. Nobody is smiling up there. It?s all old people, and it?s plumbing,? ? he said, describing his misgivings at the time.

Four of the 12 samples tested came back positive for cancer, he said. The aggressiveness of prostate cancer is measured with the Gleason Scale, which assigns a score of 2 to minor cases and 10 to the most severe. Milstead?s score was 9.

Treatment can include full removal of the gland, radiation or hormone therapy, said Milstead?s surgeon, Army Lt. Col. Stephen Brassell. Given the aggressiveness of the cancer and the general?s physical fitness and relative youth, it was determined that surgery was the best option.

?At first I wasn?t totally in denial, but I was saying, ?Well, maybe there?s other ways of dealing with this other than cutting it out,? because there are all the post-operative challenges of your plumbing and hydraulics and all those sorts of things,? Milstead said. ?But when you?re dealing with cancer, everything changes. This was no kidding, varsity-level stuff.?

The most difficult part was breaking the news to family, he said. When the biopsy results were completed, his wife, Suzanne, was in Oakland, Calif., visiting their oldest child, Christy Buckham, 32, and her newborn girl, Mia. He waited about a week to join his wife and break the news in person.

?Those eight or nine days,? he said, ?were some of the toughest of my life.?

Milstead said he was impressed with the medical care at Walter Reed, and has relied on Suzanne, his four children and his Catholic faith for perspective. He has started to work partial days, and jokingly referred to a catheter removed two weeks after surgery as ?evil incarnate.?

The general also has received encouragement from other Marines who had prostate cancer, including Col. Bradley Shumaker, the executive assistant to Lt. Gen. Richard Tryon, deputy commandant for plans, policies and operations.

Shumaker, who had his prostate removed Jan. 31, said senior officers frequently prefer to keep their personal lives private, focusing instead on junior Marines. By speaking out, Milstead will encourage others to get screening and know their family medical history, the colonel said.

?It doesn?t surprise me that someone like him would come forward and say, ?Hey, this happened to me,? ? Shumaker said. ?It?s putting a face to the story and letting others know that it?s survivable, but it needs to be identified and treated ? not ignored.?

Facebook stops private shares trading ahead of May IPO

SAN FRANCISCO -- Social-networking site Facebook is halting the sale of its shares on secondary markets effective next week as the company prepares to hold its initial public offering in May, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Facebook recently asked firms that arrange trading of its privately held shares to stop doing so, a move intended to reduce churn in its valuation that could complicate matters as it sets an IPO price, according to another person familiar with the matter.

Facebook is planning to raise $5 billion in an offering that could value the company at up to $100 billion, making it the largest IPO in Silicon Valley history.

The May time frame for the high-profile IPO is dependent on the Securities and Exchange Commission declaring the company's prospectus effective, the first source noted. Facebook has amended its prospectus three times since filing paperwork to go public in early February.

A Facebook spokesman declined to comment.

The company has said it wants its shares to trade under the ticker FB, but has yet to announce which exchange it will list its shares on.

With more than 845 million users, Facebook is the world's No.1 social networking service and is challenging established Web companies such as Google Inc and Yahoo Inc, which compete with Facebook for users' time online and for advertising dollars.

As Facebook moves towards its IPO, some investors are raising concerns about Facebook's dual-class share structure, which will give Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg control of 56.9 percent of the company's post-IPO voting shares. At a recent meeting with financial analysts and investors, Facebook executives suggested that Zuckerberg will not be very involved with Wall Street.

Despite the criticisms, investor demand for equity in Facebook has burned strong for years, with shares of Facebook trading briskly in special secondary markets for private company stock.

SharesPost Financial, a firm that facilitates trading shares of privately held companies such as Facebook, announced on Wednesday that it would cease facilitating transactions in Facebook as of the end of day on Friday "to help ensure the company's orderly transition into the public markets."

Special Delivery is book two in the Freedom (human trafficking) series. For anyone who may not have read book one, Deliver Me From Evil, can you fill us in on the focus of the series in general, and Special Delivery in particular?

The Freedom series is a three-book fiction series built around the horrifying topic of human trafficking. People often ask me why I decided to write about such a dark topic. First, I explain that I?m not writing about a dark topic; I?m writing about the Light that shines in that darkness. And second, I believe the Church should be at the forefront of the modern-day abolition movement to set the captives (modern-day slaves) free. The three books in this series specifically follow the life of a young woman named Mara, who was sold into sexual slavery by her own parents in Mexico, and then smuggled across the border into San Diego by her uncle who then served as her pimp. A strong sub-plot throughout the series tells of two sisters in the Golden Triangle of Thailand, Chanthra and Lawan, who are also trapped in a brothel. Finally, a teenage girl named Francesca, kidnapped in Juarez, Mexico, and forced into prostitution, is introduced in book two. Special Delivery picks up two years after book one, Deliver Me From Evil, ends, and continues with the stories of Mara and Lawan, as well as others carried over from book one. Mara hopes she is finally free to pursue her own life because she was rescued from the brothel and her testimony helped lock up her uncle for life. But the man has underground connections and is driven by revenge to reach out from behind bars and deliver the ultimate punishment to his niece.

This isn?t the first fiction series you?ve written on nationwide and even worldwide social issues, the one previous to this being the persecuted Church. What draws you to these difficult topics?

As a Christian, I believe I am compelled to use my God-given gifts to honor God in all I do?and that includes exposing the deeds of darkness, calling sinners to repentance, and taking a stand for righteousness by doing all I can to help rescue those who are suffering. I dare not turn my back on ?the least of these.? I also believe that God placed this sort of burden on my heart even before I became a Christian at the age of 26. I?ve always been a champion of the underdog, a ?soap-box? preacher, if you will. When I met Jesus, I simply redirected that passion toward His people, realizing I couldn?t effect real change in my own strength anyway.

With your obvious passion to right social and moral wrongs through the power of the Gospel, how did writing and speaking enter into that?

I?ve known I wanted to be a writer since I was a child?never wanted to do anything else. When I was a teenager I told my then boyfriend (now husband) that I was going to be a writer one day. What a blessing that God allowed me to fulfill that dream! After becoming a believer and growing in my faith, it was natural to take my passion to fight for others and incorporate it into my writing. Speaking, on the other hand, was an entirely different story. I was terrified of public speaking when I was young, and the day I received Christ I made a ?bargain? with God, promising to do anything He asked of me?so long as it didn?t include public speaking. (Does God have a sense of humor or what???) Now, when I stand in front of audiences where I believe God has called me to speak (and actually find myself enjoying it!), I tell my listeners that if God has called them to do something and they feel it?s impossible, they can consider me their ?visual aid? that NOTHING is impossible with God IF we will simply take that first step of obedience and let Him fulfill His purpose in and through us.

With the topics of the worldwide persecuted Church and human trafficking under your belt, what other issues are you dealing with in your writing?

My Christmas 2011 book, A Christmas Journey Home, dealt with the immigration/border problem, and my Christmas 2012 novel, Unexpected Christmas Hero, will be about homelessness in America. The next issues-related fiction series I have on tap?which I am just starting to write, by the way?is called the ?Patches of Courage? series and will begin releasing in late January 2013. Book one is The Moses Quilt, based on the life of Harriet Tubman, and will be followed by The Christmas Quilt and The Impossible Quilt. This series of books will highlight historical American women whose Christian faith enabled them to walk in great courage and make a difference in the lives of countless people.

Special Delivery is the story of Mara, who is now free from sex slavery.? It is the story of her life.? Yet it?s more than just her life.? It?s the suspense of revenge from Jefe.? It?s the opportunity to help other girls get free.? Will Mara find the grace to work through her personal issues and reach forth and help?

With Kathi?s incorporation of a tensive romantic relationship that intrigues both Jonathan and Mara, would Mara be able and willing to have a relationship that?s ?normal? with a husband?? Would Jonathan be able to handle her brokenness?

Saints overshadow NFL meetings

PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? In this unpredictable, headline-grabbing offseason, not even hot topics such as overtime or instant replay can push aside the New Orleans Saints and their bounty program.

NFL owners completed their meetings Wednesday by passing several significant rules changes, including expanding the postseason OT rules to the regular season and having all turnovers reviewed by the replay official, just as all scoring plays currently are.

Yet the spotlight all week was on the Saints, who are talking to Bill Parcells about becoming interim coach while Sean Payton is suspended for the 2012 season.

Other NFL coaches offered their take on Commissioner Roger Goodell's hefty punishments for Payton and former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, who was suspended indefinitely for overseeing the bounty pool that offered payouts for damaging hits to targeted opponents.

Most coaches said they found it important to discuss. And not only with the media, but with their teams.

"The whole league will talk about it," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said Wednesday. "The commissioner wants the entire league to make sure it's discussed ? to go forward using it as an example, to stress there is no place for that in our league."

Several coaches echoed Coughlin, with the hope they will need to bring it up only once to their players. Clubs will gather for workouts in mid-April.

"It's definitely necessary to mention it," said Ron Rivera, whose Carolina Panthers play the Saints twice a year in the NFC South. "The precedent has been set by the commissioner and they need to understand that and it is not to be broached again. Going forward, we won't have to go over these things again."

Goodell reiterated the league's strong stance against non-contract bonuses such as the bounty program that cost New Orleans a $500,000 fine and two second-round draft choices. Goodell said the league will not allow any cash payments between players, whether the clubs are involved or not.

"It's not permissible and we are going to take that out of the game," he said.

Goodell expects to speak with players' union head DeMaurice Smith before the end of the week and hopes to have the NFLPA's recommendations on punishment for players involved in the bounties by then or soon after. The league will be scheduling additional hearings in the investigation.

Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz stressed how easy it is to cross the line from acceptable rewards to something sinister.

Schwartz said past awards he's given out while working for the Tennessee Titans and the Lions ? baseball bats or a boxing glove for big hits ? had league approval, because they didn't have any monetary significance.

"It was part of the game-ball program. It wasn't part of anything else," Schwartz said. "A recognition system has been in effect for football since pee wee ball. We give out game balls. We give out trophies at the end of the season for all different things. A lot of colleges give out stickers on helmets; high schools give out stickers on helmets. There's a big difference between things like that and things like bounties."

Schwartz noted that it's not unheard of for QBs to buy gifts for their linemen, or for running backs to do the same if they have a big season.

"That would all receive very good press," he said. "I think what this shows is how fine some of the lines are and how easy it is to go from something like that that's been around and has been part of football to something that should never be part of football and is not good for our game."

The game will see some changes in the upcoming season.

All games that go into overtime now cannot end on a field goal on the first possession. The opposing team must get one series, and if it also kicks a field goal, the extra period continues. Of course, if it fails to score it loses, and if it gets a touchdown, it wins.

The rule has not been a factor since it was instituted in 2010, with only two playoff games going to OT. One ended on the first play, Tim Tebow's 80-yard touchdown pass to Demaryius Thomas for a Denver victory over Pittsburgh. The other had several possessions for each team before the Giants beat the 49ers in the NFC title game this season.

The vote on adopting the new overtime rule was 30-2.

Other rules changes: a team will lose a down for illegally kicking a loose ball; too many men on the field becomes a dead ball foul; and a player receiving a crackback block is now considered a defenseless player and the hit will result in a 15-yard penalty.

Not passed were proposals to have the booth official handle video reviews rather than the referee, and outlawing the horse-collar tackle made on quarterbacks in the pocket.

Given the NFL's concern with player safety, the failure to extend the horse-collar rule seemed surprising. But competition committee chairman Rich McKay said the ownership "didn't think this can impact on player safety."

"The rule was developed for the open-field tackle when a defender has the chance to do something else (in making the tackle)," he said. "He's also able to use the runner's momentum against him. We didn't think that applied to the pocket, didn't see the injury risk."

Several bylaw changes were tabled until the league meetings in May, including expanding preseason rosters to 90, designating one player suffering a major injury before Week 2 of the season as eligible to return from injured reserve, and moving the trading deadline back two weeks to after Week 8.

McKay expects them to pass at the next meetings in Atlanta.

"There were good ideas and suggestions, no resistance," he said. "We'll work on the language."
