SPRINGBORO ? The Dayton area?s largest credit union and one of its largest real estate firms will form a joint venture on a mortgage company.

Wright-Patt Credit Union and Irongate Inc. Realtors made the announcement Friday at Irongate?s Springboro office on East Central Avenue.

Leaders of both organizations said the deal benefits the local community because Irongate clients who choose Wright-Patt for their mortgage will get local loan servicing.

Wright-Patt?s loan originators can send the loan package to a local underwriter to evaluate the risk of the loan, which speeds up processing and response times, said Steve Brown, co-owner of Centerville-based Irongate.

?The more houses we can help put people in generate more commerce in the community,? Brown said.

This is the first partnership of its type for Wright-Patt, which could generate more home loan business for the credit union, said Doug Fecher, president and chief executive officer of the Fairborn organization. The credit union?s deposits are invested back in the Dayton community, he said.

?Both organizations basically stand for the development and growth of this community, which is why this partnership makes sense,? Fecher said. Irongate previously partnered on home loan financing with Wells Fargo under the same name of Southern Ohio Mortgage. Wright-Patt loan originators will work on site at each of Irongate?s six offices throughout the Dayton area. Two loan originators have been hired so far, said Tim Mislansky, chief lending officer of Wright-Patt.

Perhaps predictably given Sidney Crosby?s concussion history, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review?s Josh Yohe reports that the Penguins were not able to find an underwriter willing to take on the massive gamble that is Sidney Crosby?s ?lifetime contract? with Pittsburgh:

The Penguins cannot insure themselves against a concussion-related early retirement by franchise center Sidney Crosby, NHL sources told the Tribune-Review on Friday.

Crosby, 24, has missed all but 63 games the past two seasons because of concussion symptoms. He and the Penguins agreed to a 12-year contract worth $104.4 million ? all of it guaranteed. The team will present the contract to the league Sunday for approval.

Insurance companies offer teams protection against career-ending injuries, but Crosby?s concussion history is considered a pre-existing condition. If Crosby cannot finish his contract because of a concussion-related injury, he will still be paid in full, but the Penguins would not receive assistance from an insurance policy on the deal, sources said.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Calling it the next logical step in a near six-decade evolution, Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. said Thursday that it plans to split into two separate publicly traded companies.

Under the proposal, one company will operate as a newspaper and book publisher, while the other will be an entertainment company that includes the 20th Century Fox movie studio, the Fox broadcast TV network and the Fox News channel. It may take a year to work out the details.

The Murdoch family, which controls nearly 40 percent of the voting shares in News Corp., is expected to maintain control of both companies.

Rupert Murdoch said in a conference call with investors that a split would result in two strong companies that have more operational flexibility and be poised for greater growth.

"We've come a long way in our journey that began nearly 60 years ago with a single newspaper operating out of Adelaide," Murdoch said, referring to the single Australian newspaper he inherited from his father and became the foundation for News Corp.

"Each of these new companies would have the potential to continue that journey and prosper as an independent entity long into the future."

The split of News Corp. is a symbolic turning point for its 81-year-old media mogul. Through the years, Murdoch maintained a fondness for newspapers even as he purchased entertainment companies. In hearings last summer before U.K. lawmakers, he conceded that he regularly called newspaper editors under his employ with the greeting: "What's doing?"

Investors have already given their blessing to the split, having pushed shares of the company's Class B stock up 10 percent since the news of the plan broke early Tuesday. The shares edged down 15 cents to $22.26 in midday trading Thursday.

Under the current proposal, News Corp. shareholders will receive one share of common stock in the new company for each share of News Corp. that they currently hold. Each company would maintain two classes of stock.

Murdoch will serve as chairman of both companies and CEO of the media and entertainment company. The company said it plans to put together management teams and boards for both businesses over the next several months.

While News Corp.'s board unanimously approved pursuing a split, it will still need to approve any formal proposal. The deal is also subject to shareholder and numerous regulatory approvals.

News Corp. said it plans to hold a meeting of its shareholders sometime in 2013 and expects the deal to be completed in about a year.

Analysts relished the prospect that the faster growing pay TV segment would be valued more highly by new investors who weren't willing to buy shares in a company being dragged down by a newspaper industry in decline.

The publishing company, which will include The Wall Street Journal, is expected to be the much smaller of the two, with some analysts valuing it at about $5 billion, compared with the current market value for News Corp. as a whole of about $54 billion.

Murdoch emphasized on the call that the split doesn't mean that he's giving up on his publishing business, noting its "very strong" balance sheet and "robust" net cash position.

"The opportunity is so big, a single-minded pursuit is the best approach," Murdoch said. "Our aim is nothing less than this to create the most ambitious well-capitalized and highly motivated news and publishing company in the world."

Still, many analysts had questions about which entity would bear the financial risks of the ongoing U.K. probe into phone hacking and bribery. Besides legal costs, News Corp. also faces potential fines in the U.S. under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which punishes companies that have bribed officials abroad.

Breaking off the newspaper and book publishing assets into a separate company makes them more "bite size" and ripe for being taken private by a third party, according to Needham & Co. analyst Laura Martin.

It is unclear if the split will appease the British telecommunications regulator, Ofcom, which is reviewing whether British Sky Broadcasting ? of which News Corp. holds a 39 percent stake ? is "fit and proper" to hold a broadcasting license. Ofcom is expected to wrap up its review later this summer.

British authorities have been probing allegations that News Corp. journalists at its now-shuttered News of the World and other papers hacked into phones and bribed public officials to gain exclusive information.

4GB of RAM, half a TB of storage, Sandy Bridge and an 11.6-inch 1366 x 768 panel starting at €450 (about $563), sounds like a pretty sweet deal on a last-gen ultrabook right? Well, Acer's TravelMate B1113 is actually brand new and, as you dig a little deeper into the specs, this one sounds more like a rather hefty netbook. And we do mean hefty -- this laptop apparently tips the scales at 1.88 Kg, which puts it a touch over the four pound mark. 4.1 pounds certainly isn't shoulder busting, but it's a solid half a pound more than you'd expect from a machine of this size. Then there's the fact that the base model ships with a 1.4Ghz Celeron, and the top shelf €560 version (roughly $700) only sports a 1.5GHz Core i3. We haven't been able to dig up the dimensions on this sucker, but the press pics don't make it look particularly bulky. We can only assume, given its considerable weight and diminutive size, that the chassis is made of cast iron. On the plus side, it does have a matte screen... that's gotta count for something, right?

New features coming to Google Android system

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Google is unveiling a new search tool to help you get the right information at the right time on your mobile device.

Called Google Now, the tool will be part of the next version of Google's Android operating system, called Jelly Bean. Google Now and other Jelly Bean features will be available in mid-July. Some devices, including the Galaxy Nexus, will get the upgrade automatically over the air.

Google unveiled Jelly Bean in opening a conference in San Francisco for computer programmers. During the conference, Google is also expected to unveil a small tablet computer bearing Google's brand.

With Google Now, if you say "traffic," for example, it will look at your usual commute to work and show you alternative routes if there's a lot of traffic. It will tell you the scores of your favorite sports teams automatically, and it will keep you up to date on flight statuses if you are flying somewhere. You'll have to activate Google Now to start using it.

Google Inc. said the Google Now feature will get smarter as you use it more.

The feature bears resemblance to the Siri virtual assistant on Apple's iPhone.

Jelly Bean will also come with the ability to share photos by tapping two phones together, using an emerging wireless technology called near-field communications.

Google said there are a million new Android devices activated daily, up from 400,000 a year ago. Google says there's particularly fast growth in emerging markets such as Brazil and India. Android is now the chief rival to the mobile software running Apple's iPhone and iPad.

If speculation about the long-rumored device pans out, the Google tablet is likely be seen more of a threat to Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle Fire than Apple Inc.'s top-selling iPad. More details should emerge Wednesday during the opening speech of a three-day conference in San Francisco for computer programmers.

Like the Kindle Fire, the Google tablet is believed to have a 7-inch screen, measured diagonally ? smaller than the iPad's nearly 10-inch display. If it's the smaller size, Google Inc.'s tablet probably would be in the same price range as the Kindle Fire, which sells for $199.

A Google expansion into the tablet market would bring another imposing entrant into what is already a battle of tech heavyweights. Last week, Microsoft Corp. announced its own tablet, Surface. Expected to go on sale this fall, it will run on a revamped version of Windows and compete directly with the iPad.

Google hasn't revealed who will be delivering Wednesday's news. It won't be CEO Larry Page. The company revealed last week that Page recently lost his voice because of an unspecified health problem. The condition isn't serious enough prevent him from carrying out his duties as CEO.

Although the tablet is supposed to carry the Google brand and be sold by the company, the machine will be made by AsusTek Computer Inc., according to published reports citing unnamed people familiar the product. Google also recently expanded into the device-making business with its $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility Holdings, but the company has stressed that it intends to continue to rely on Asus and other manufacturers that have embraced Android.

The new tablet is expected to be called the Nexus Seven, a reference to a line of smartphones that Google developed to run on its Android software for mobile phones. The Nexus phones have been made by a variety of manufacturers, too.

Google originally sold the first Nexus phone two years ago exclusively in an online store, but scrapped that idea after a few months.

There are already other Android-powered tablets on the market, but none have proven nearly as popular as the iPad or Kindle Fire. That has raised worries at Google as more people rely on tablets to surf the Internet.

If Apple and Amazon establish themselves as the dominant tablet makers, they could set up their operating systems in ways that de-emphasize Google's Internet search engine and other services. Apple develops its own system, while Amazon modifies Android for use in Kindles.

Apple already has announced that the next version of the iPad operating system will abandon Google's digital maps as the built-in navigation system. That shift could cause neighborhood merchants to spend less money advertising on Google.

Google's new tablet is expected to be the first to run on Jelly Bean.

Analysts are also speculating Google that will introduce another long-rumored product, a home-entertainment system for streaming music.

Google also could provide a glimpse at a pair of Internet-connected glasses that it eventually hopes to market as a way to continuously filter and share life through the Web.

Touch therapy helps reduce pain, nausea in cancer patients, study suggests

ScienceDaily (June 26, 2012) ? A new study by the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center shows that patients reported significant improvement in side effects of cancer treatment following just one Jin Shin Jyutsu session. Jin Shin Jyutsu is an ancient form of touch therapy similar to acupuncture in philosophy.

Presented at the 2012 Markey Cancer Center Research Day by Jennifer Bradley who is the Jin Shin Jyutsu integrative practitioner at Markey, the study included 159 current cancer patients. Before and after each Jin Shin Jyutsu session, Bradley asked patients to assess their symptoms of pain, stress and nausea on a scale of 0-10, with 0 representing no symptoms.

The study found that in each session patients experienced significant improvement in the areas of pain, stress, and nausea with the first visit and in subsequent visits as well. The mean decreases experienced were three points for stress and two points for both pain and nausea.

"I was pleased to see quantitatively the improvements that patients noted in these primary areas of discomfort," said Bradley. "It was interesting to note that regardless of age, sex or diagnosis, cancer patients received a statistically significant improvement in the side effects from treatment. It is encouraging to note that Jin Shin Jyutsu made improvements in these areas without adding additional unwanted effects that so often occur with medication interventions."

Funded by a grant from the Lexington Cancer Foundation, Jin Shin Jyutsu is considered part of an integrative treatment plan available at the UK Markey Cancer Center. Bradley offers Jin Shin Jyutsu to all cancer patients at no charge. Patients may self-refer, though half are referred by their physician or Markey staff.

During a Jin Shin Jyutsu session, patients receive light touches on 52 specific energetic points called Safety Energy Locks as well as fingers, toes, and midpoints on the upper arm, upper calf and lower leg in predetermined orders known as "flows." Patients remained clothed except for shoes and all hand placements are done over clothing.

Sessions were performed in the Jin Shin Jyutsu Treatment Room, Chemotherapy Outpatient Clinic, or in the patient's hospital room. The study also noted that the greatest overall improvement came from sessions held in the Jin Shin Jyutsu Treatment Room, where sessions are generally of a longer duration.

The study did not include controls for several parameters including the time between sessions or location and duration of service. Bradley's next study will control more of these variables, and her team will access patients' medical records over the time period of their participation to evaluate changes in patients' medication usage for cancer and symptom management of pain, stress and nausea.

"The American Cancer Society has noted that quality of life is an issue for all cancer patients; those undergoing treatment, late stage patients, and cancer survivors," Bradley said. "There is a need for additional research to develop evidence-based interventions that have a positive impact on the quality of life for all of these individuals without adding to their burden. From what I have seen in my office and the results shown in the study, I believe that Jin Shin Jyutsu has great promise in this area."

Former Obama administration official Anne-Marie Slaughter talks to TODAY's Natalie Morales about her controversial article in The Atlantic, which debates whether women can juggle high-powered careers and be good mothers at the same time.

Women can have it all if they fight for what they need.

That was the message that came from a powerful woman who sparked a national debate last week about women and their success in the workplace and as mothers.

Anne-Marie Slaughter, a former U.S. State Department official and now a Princeton professor, spoke about her The Atlantic article, ?Why Women Still Can?t Have It All?, Monday on TODAY, and wanted to make it clear that her piece was not negative but more of a call to action to women struggling with balancing work and life.

?Women have come leaps and bounds,? she said about the advancements women have made in the workplace, ?but we need another round of change.?

Working mothers, she continued, make it to a point in their career where they?re beginning to climb the ladder of success, but then they end up feeling ?unbelievably torn? when family and work responsibilities clash.

Indeed, many women are questioning whether they can really have it all. An informal poll taken last week in an article about Slaughter?s story and the controversy that ensured, asked ?Do you think women can have it all?? found only 11 percent of the nearly 4,000 respondents felt it was possible, compared to 48 percent that offered a resounding ?no? to the question.

But in a sign of hope, 41 percent voted: ?Maybe, when the workplace changes.?

And it?s change Slaughter wants to see.

?We need to be honest about how hard it is,? she said about the first step women need to take. And secondly, she stressed, ?you have to ask for what you need. If you need to work from home, ask for it.?

In the end, she added, it?s all about a serious ?desire for change.?

Change needs to happen on a larger scale as well, maintained?Debra L. Ness, president of the National Partnership for Women & Families.?

"Most of America?s women and their families are confronted on a daily basis with the fact that ?having it all? is still a distant dream, and we know that it will not get better until our workplaces are family friendly," she said. "We need policies like paid sick days and paid family and medical leave for all workers, and all workers need the flexibility to be caregivers and breadwinners for their families."

Slaughter's article, she added, "should be a call to action for employers and lawmakers to finally address the growing demand for workplaces that meet the needs of 21st century families."

Cyprus becomes next eurozone state to seek bailout

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) ? Cyprus on Monday became the fifth eurozone country to request financial aid from its partners in the European currency union as it struggles to shore up its banks, which took heavy losses on Greek debt.

The island nation's government said in a terse statement that it required assistance following "negative spillover effects through its financial sector, due to its large exposure in the Greek economy."

Government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou wouldn't say how much Cyprus would ask from the European bailout fund, saying that the amount would be subject to negotiations in the coming days. The 27 leaders of the European Union will meet in Brussels on Thursday.

Analysts estimate the sum would likely be around ?5 billion ($6.2 billion) but could reach ?10 billion. That is a fraction of the bailouts given to the other countries ? Spain has asked for as much as ?100 billion for its banks.

Cyprus needs about ?1.8 billion ($2.26 billion) - or about 10 percent of its gross domestic product - by a June 30 deadline to recapitalize its second largest lender, Cyprus Popular Bank. The lender is the most heavily exposed of the country's banks to Greek government debt, which lost most of its value this year in a writedown.

Over the past weeks it became clear that the bank would not find the money from the private sector and would need to get it from the government, itself strapped for cash and unable to raise money in bond markets, where its borrowing rates are too high.

Stefanou said that despite its demand for European aid, the Cypriot government would continue negotiations for a possible loan from a country outside the EU, such as Russia or China.

"One doesn't preclude the other," Stefanou told the Associated Press. "Our efforts to secure a bilateral loan will continue."

Finance Minister Vassos Shiarly said last week that clinching a loan from another country would strengthen Cyprus' bargaining position with its eurozone partners in negotiating the terms that would come attached with a bailout loan.

"It could be a combination of sources of funding, on the understanding that the terms offered for these loans ? either from the (EU bailout fund) or a bilateral loan are satisfactory and to the state's benefit," Shiarly said.

The Cypriot government has been apprehensive about turning solely to the EU bailout fund because of the tough spending cuts and tax increases that it may be forced to enact in exchange for the money, as debt-crushed Greece has had to.

The Cypriot economy has thrived on foreign businesses setting up shop in the island due to its low, 10 percent corporate tax rate which the government is keen to protect.

Greece, Ireland and Portugal, which have needed European bailouts to finance their government debt, are on strict austerity plans. Spain, which has demanded money to rescue its banks, is still negotiating the terms of its aid deal.

It's not clear whether the Cyprus government will be able to fend off tough, EU-imposed austerity terms. A European Commission report last month said the island is "experiencing very serious macroeconomic imbalances which need to be urgently addressed," including slashing spending on a bloated public sector and pension reform.

Earlier Monday, ratings agency Fitch became the third agency to downgrade Cyprus' credit rating to junk status, estimating that the island will need another ?4 billion ($5 billion) to recapitalize its banking sector. It cited the banks' exposure to Greek debt as well as a rise in bad loans over the last year as the Cypriot economy has shrunk while unemployment has hit a record high of 10 percent.

Fitch predicts that Cyprus' government debt will shoot above 100 percent of GDP, more than 12 points more than its previous estimate. The agency said that a government target to bring the budget deficit below 3 percent of GDP through another round of spending cuts and tax increases will be missed by as much as a percentage point.

Cypriot banks could suffer further losses from a possible Greek eurozone exit since they also hold an estimated ?22 billion in Greek business and household loans.

Compounding the island's banking troubles are projections that its economy will shrink by 1 percent of GDP this year.

Pittsburgh becoming a college hockey hotbed

PITTSBURGH -- Christian Hanson had the advantage of growing up in a hockey family, and he had options to further his development as a player.

Hanson, who grew up near Pittsburgh, also had an advantage that kids from previous hockey-playing generations in this area didn?t have -- he could stay home. Instead of leaving his family, or having them move to a more traditional hockey region, Hanson played youth hockey for the Pittsburgh Hornets and at a local high school before going to college at Notre Dame.

"It was great," Hanson, whose father Dave played professionally for a decade but is better known for being one of the Hanson brothers in the movie "Slap Shot." "A lot of that is attributed to Mario Lemieux and the boom he created and you?re seeing it now. It is awesome. I talked to people I play with now that had to leave their families when they were 14 to go play at Shattuck [St. Mary?s] or a place like that.

"That is the price you pay for the game you love. I would have done it if it was something I had to do, but being from Pittsburgh and how it is turning into such a hockey hotbed in America, the kids in this area are lucky to be able to stay home."

Hanson, along with fellow Pittsburgh youth hockey alum Matt Bartkowski, were back home Friday to speak to 61 young players from the area at the Reebok College Hockey Summit at 84 Lumber Arena in Neville Township, Pa.

The kids were at the summit to listen to presentations and for question-and-answer sessions with the ex-players, with representatives from College Hockey Inc. and with 17 coaches from the college ranks along with three from the United States Hockey League.

They were also there to play, which offered a scouting opportunity for the coaches.

"Our message is 'come play college hockey,'" Providence coach Nate Leaman said. "It is the reward of more development time, the reward of an education and all of the guys who have gone on to the NHL. It also allows us to go out and view kids in the community and for them to be viewed on the ice by colleges because one of the misperceptions the kids sometimes have is that we?re not watching them and we?re very much out there."

Coaches like Leaman are spending more time recruiting kids from the Pittsburgh area than ever before. Guys from this area have made it to the NHL -- Ryan Malone began a steady stream of Pittsburgh-born kids during the past decade.

The numbers are growing at the youth level; more kids are playing in the USHL, more are ending up at colleges or in the Canadian junior leagues. While the people in charge of this summit obviously want the kids to choose the NCAA route, it is a boon for everyone that there are more kids from this area who are strong enough prospects to have a choice to make.

"Pittsburgh hockey is busting at the seams right now," said Derek Schooley, who has been the coach at Robert Morris since the Colonials started a Division I hockey program. "When I first got here, hockey was kind of in a downward spiral. You didn?t know if the Penguins were going to stay, and the arrival of Sidney Crosby and [Evgeni] Malkin and [Marc-Andre] Fleury and hockey has really taken off. Youth hockey is growing. Pittsburgh is producing more and more players to college, to junior, to all levels. The hockey here is really exploding."

This event coincided with the 2012 NHL Draft being hosted by the Penguins at Consol Energy Arena. The 2011 draft was a breakout class for youth hockey in this area as four players -- J.T. Miller, John Gibson, Brandon Saad and Vincent Trochek -- went in the first 64 selections.

The hockey footprint continues to grow at multiple levels. The Penguins have sold out every game for years and have never been more popular in a town that was once known primarily for its NFL and MLB franchises.

WEAR WHAT THE DRAFTEES WEAR

College hockey is the next level on the verge of a breakout. Robert Morris is a young program, but is much improved and will host the 2013 Frozen Four at Consol Energy Center next spring. Penn State will be the newest program at the Division I level next season, and with that comes another new hockey arena just a couple of hours away.

Toss in Ohio State about three hours west on I-70 and kids from this area have options if they want to stay closer to home and play college hockey.

"Now with colleges like Robert Morris, who has a great Division I program, Ohio State is only three hours away and Penn State is building a state-of-the-art facility, it is going to even more reiterate that Pittsburgh is one of the top-flight places to look for American hockey players," Hanson said.

Added Bartkowski: "One of the factors in me choosing Ohio State was how close to home it was. My parents could come watch my games. I could shoot home for a spring weekend or in the fall for a weekend here or there. Especially with Penn State coming in and that rink they?re going to have, that?s going to really help the area a lot. Then there is the Youngstown team that moved up to the USHL. I can?t see it being much longer before the city gets a junior team again, and that will help boost youth hockey even more."

BEIRUT (AP) ? A video emerged Friday showing more than a dozen bloodied corpses in Syria, some of them piled on top of each other and in military uniforms, in what the government said was a "massacre" by rebels in the northern province of Aleppo.

The circumstances of the killings were not immediately clear. But in the video ? which The Associated Press could not independently verify ? the narrator said the dead were members of the "shabiha," or pro-regime gunmen.

Syria's state-run news agency, SANA, said terrorist groups had killed and mutilated at least 25 people in Daret Azzeh, a rebel-held area in the Aleppo countryside. The government refers to rebels as terrorists.

"The terrorist groups in Daret Azzeh committed a brutal massacre against the citizens, whom they had kidnapped earlier in the day," SANA said.

The report said at least 25 people were killed, but others were missing.

It was not clear whether the men were killed execution-style or died in clashes. An activist in the area, Mohammed Saeed, said rebels regularly collect the bodies of the dead from the government side and dump them by the side of the road so troops can come and collect them later.

Both sides in the conflict have become increasingly militarized as the country veers toward civil war and an internationally brokered peace plan has failed to take hold. Activists say more than 14,000 people have been killed since the uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime began in March last year.

The city of Aleppo, Syria's largest, has been relatively quiet, but towns and villages around it have witnessed intense clashes between troops and opposition fighters. Daret Azzeh has endured intense government shelling over the past two weeks as Assad's forces try to regain areas taken by rebels. The violence continued Friday, as Syrian troops shelled the area and used helicopter gunships in their attacks on rebels, Saeed said.

"The army has been trying to push through for days without success," Saeed said.

Government troops have been launching a major offensive on many areas throughout the country over the past two weeks in an attempt to regain ground captured by the opposition. Attacks have mostly concentrated on Aleppo, the suburbs of the capital Damascus as well as the central province of Homs, southern region of Daraa and the eastern city of Deir el-Zour.

On Friday, activists reported that thousands of people rallied to protest the regime following afternoon prayers in different parts of Syria, including Daraa, Aleppo, the northeastern region of Hassakeh and Damascus. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said troops opened fire at protesters in Aleppo and the Damascus neighborhood of Mazzeh. Several casualties were reported.

The uprising in Syria began with regular anti-regime protests, although they have lost momentum as the revolt turns into an armed insurgency.

Also Friday, the Observatory said four senior army officers have defected from the regime. The group provided a video purporting to show two brigadier generals and two colonels who declared they were joining the opposition.

The group said the defections came Thursday ? the same day a Syria fighter pilot flew his MiG-21 warplane to neighboring Jordan, where he was given asylum.

Thousands of soldiers have abandoned the regime, but most are low-level conscripts. The Free Syria Army, the loosely linked group of rebel forces, is made up largely of defectors.

Fears for 200 as boat capsizes north of Australia

A boat carrying about 200 refugees capsized in Indonesian waters 120 nautical miles north of Australia's Christmas Island and many are feared drowned, authorities said Thursday.

Western Australia police commissioner Karl O'Callaghan said a ''large number'' of the people on the boat were feared dead, The Australian newspaper reported.

''There were about 200 refugees on board we think. Currently there's about 40 on the hull and the rest are in the water,'' O'Callaghan told the paper.

''Some of the very early reports suggest that up to 75 people may have drowned, but I do stress that they are unconfirmed at this stage,'' he added.

The Australian cited an Indonesian official as saying 100 people from Sri Lanka were reportedly on board the ship.

People-smugglers?
An Australian customs spokesman said border protection had detected what was believed to be a people-smuggling boat in distress earlier on Thursday.

"Indonesian navy ships are on their way there now," Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) spokesman Gagah Prakoso told Reuters.

The sinking occurred within Indonesia's search and rescue zone and Australian authorities were offering assistance, Australia's Maritime Safety Authority said.

Refugees seeking asylum in Australia often set sail from Indonesia heading for Christmas Island in dangerous and overcrowded boats.

As many as 200 died when an overcrowded boat sank off the coast of East Java in December, 2011. Fifty asylum seekers travelling from Indonesia to Christmas Island died when a storm dashed their boat onto rocks in December 2010. In 2001, a crowded boat known as the SIEV X sank on its way to Australia with the loss of 350 lives.

Australia's Indian Ocean territory of Christmas Island, south of Indonesia, is a popular destination for asylum seekers, who travel by often crowded boats from Indonesia, with the help of people smugglers.

So far this year, more than 50 boats carrying a total of more than 4,000 asylum seekers have been detected by Australian authorities.?

With rumors swirling over Ann Curry's upcoming exit on The Today Show, a couple of poorly-timed incidents this week made life extra difficult for the NBC reporter.

First, there was the following caption, which ran underneath an interview Curry was conducting yesterday morning and which was meant to tease an appearance by Steve Carell - but which clearly, accidentally, also had a double meaning:

Then there's the latest cover of Ladies' Home Journal. It features Curry and the accompanying story finds her discussing The Today Show's recent ratings woes.

"It's hard not to take it personally," Curry tells the magazine. "You worry, Am I not good enough? Am I not what people need? Am I asking the right questions? When people say negative things or speculate, you can't help but feel hurt. I know NBC pays my salary but I have never doubted who I work for. I think about the people who watch. They're the ones who matter to me. I want to feel I haven't dropped the ball when it comes to them."

She seems like a nice, professional woman. NBC should really do Curry the favor of not dragging out this firing any longer than it has to.
