(AP) ? Mitt Romney's campaign is pushing back against Obama campaign commercials depicting the former Massachusetts governor as someone who shipped jobs overseas as a private venture capitalist.

Romney campaign adviser Ed Gillespie says this charge by the Obama camp is, in his words, "a lie."

Gillespie tells NBC's "Today" show Thursday there wasn't any evidence Romney outsourced jobs as head of Bain Capital. Gillespie says, "When a president doesn't tell the truth, how can we trust him to lead."

Gillespie notes that Romney left the venture capital firm in 1999, saying the job outsourcing wasn't the policy when Romney was in charge. That, Gillespie says, has "been shown to be demonstrably false." Romney's push-back against President Barack Obama on this issue is the basis of a new Romney campaign ad.
