25 Things NOT to Say to Those Who Are Mourning | Man of Depravity

2012 October 30

by Tyler

This fall semester is my last semester of seminary and it seems fitting that I?m taking a class on death and dying to close it out.

I shared with the class that part of the reason I was taking the class is because saying the wrong thing always scared me enough to never say anything. This way I couldn?t cause any harm, but I also did very little to support those who are mourning a loss of some sort.

Throughout the semester the conversations I?ve had others made me realize this is fairly common among human beings. On the other hand there?s also this problem: people always think they have to say SOMETHING, but many don?t think about how their words come across.

I?ve been taking notes throughout the class and have a list of 25 things NOT to say to those who are mourning. Part of these come directly from my professor, and part of the list are the things I?ve learned not to say by saying them.

I?m not saying these statements are necessarily wrong but they are clearly unhelpful in providing care for the bereaved.

Make sure to add your own list in the comments down below.

  1. I know how you feel (you don?t).
  2. How are you doing today? (do you want to know the truth?)
  3. They?re in a better place now.
  4. I guess it was their time to go.
  5. At least you can move on now.
  6. It was God?s will.
  7. Give it time, you?ll be able to move on eventually.
  8. At least you still have (your other kids, your own health, your other parent).
  9. They wouldn?t want you to be sad about this.
  10. Make sure to have someone around you for a while.
  11. Let me know if there?s anything I can do to help (I wonder how many others have said the same thing).
  12. God was calling them to heaven.
  13. You?re still young, you can still (remarry, have other kids, etc).
  14. Everything has a purpose.
  15. They lived a complete life.
  16. Think about how happy they are now.
  17. At least they aren?t suffering anymore.
  18. You shouldn?t cry. Be strong for your (family, kids, etc).
  19. You really should move on.
  20. Be glad they didn?t have to suffer when they died.
  21. Let?s change the subject.
  22. You?ll find someone else.
  23. He (she) got what they deserved.
  24. I can?t imagine what you?re going through.
  25. Nothing (certainly listening is vital but empty silence is rarely helpful).

'A steep fall' for BBC as child sex abuse scandal rocks the UK

Police believe former TV star Jimmy Savile, a national icon, may have been one of Britain's worst pedophile offenders. Some of Savile's alleged 300 victims had appeared on his TV shows. NBC's Keir Simmons reports.

?

By Keir Simmons, NBC News

LONDON -- The child sex abuse scandal engulfing Britain?s public broadcaster, the BBC, has been producing disturbing headlines in the UK for almost a month, and the signs are this is just the beginning. Since the scandal broke, 300 victims have told police that they were abused by BBC TV host Jimmy Savile, suggesting this number may yet rise.

Jimmy Savile abuse scandal stuns Britain: a who's who primer

Savile hosted TV shows, worked for charities and was even awarded a knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II. More than just a TV personality, he was a national institution. He was perhaps Britain?s answer to Dick Clark, hosting the UK?s equivalent of ?American Bandstand,? the very British sounding ?Top of the Pops.?

BBC ripped for handling of sex abuse scandal tied to former host

Savile died last year, but it is another institution, the one he worked for, that has become as much the focus of this scandal. The BBC says new allegations have been made against nine current BBC staff or contributors since the revelations about Savile. Prime Minister David Cameron told Parliament: "These allegations do leave many institutions, perhaps particularly the BBC, with serious questions to answer."

It is difficult to exaggerate how fundamental the BBC is to British culture. It has the highest-rated radio stations. It runs one of the biggest TV channels. Its Web pages are the most-read. Its news is the most trusted. The BBC even has its own "sound" ? a kind of posh, but not too posh, monotone adopted by all newsreaders. British children grow up with it.

Now, it is accused of turning its back while children were allegedly abused on its premises by a BBC star and others. One BBC show, ?Jim?ll Fix It,? even invited children to write in and ask to be on TV. The access to legal minors has prompted comparisons to Penn State University assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky. It?s a scandal that is raising questions about the cult of celebrity and about how large prestigious institutions can offer pedophiles a place to hide.

One seemingly inexplicable aspect of what happened is that so many people now appear to have been aware that it was happening. In interviews, Savile was asked about whether he was a pedophile and denied it. Comedians told jokes about it. Yet for decades no one did anything to stop it. Perhaps all this is not just about the British Broadcasting Corporation but about British culture itself.

The BBC?s journalistic culture is also being questioned. The former director-general of the BBC, Mark Thompson, is soon to be chief executive of the New York Times. Under his leadership, and that of new BBC director-general George Entwistle, a BBC investigation into Savile was dropped last year. It took a rival network, ITV, to uncover the scandal.

It?s still not clear why the well-regarded show ?Newsnight? dropped the investigation, and there is no suggestion that either Thompson or Entwistle were involved in a cover up. But, on top of the BBC?s failure to stop Savile, its shelving of his investigation has shocked the UK. The BBC?s journalism is fiercely independent; its own journalists have done much to make the Savile story headline news, but many of the questions are about the competency of BBC's management rather than individual reporters and producers.

The alleged abuse happened many years ago, in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. And the BBC is not the only organization involved. For example, Savile was allowed into children?s hospital wards. The police were asked to investigate on a number of occasions but failed to bring charges.?What makes the allegations all the more disturbing to many Britons is that the BBC is funded through a tax paid by every British family with a television.

The BBC has faced serious crises before. In 2003, it was investigated after a controversial broadcast about the Iraq war that led to the suicide of a leading scientist. The public inquiry was so critical it lead to the resignation of the BBC?s then director-general. Ten years on, the BBC is still thriving. But it?s hard to imagine a more toxic claim than the allegation that the British Broadcasting Corporation allowed children to be abused by its employees. As another famous British bastion of journalism, The Economist, puts it this week, ?From the height of so much esteem, it is a steep fall.?

I Hate Progressive Insurance For Waking Me Up Over And Over ...

Tegan is mad at Flo from Progressive. Arguably, it?s her own fault: she leaves the TV on overnight as a sort of background noise. This leaves her and her fianc? at the mercy of whatever commercials run while they?re dozing. A new spot for Progressive insurance that advertises their mobile app features the loud, prominent sound of a vibrating phone. Most TV watchers might glance at their own phones in confusion, but Tegan was asleep, and was on call for work, so when she heard the vibrating sound, she woke up to check her phone.

Thought I?d share my most recent frustration with advertising, the new Progressive commercial. If you watch that unfortunate piece of marketing, you will surely notice the very loud vibrating noises at the end like a cell phone set to vibrate is ringing.

Now, the back story ? my fiance and I usually leave the TV on at a low volume overnight for the background noise, etc. Yes, I know lots of people discourage this and it?s bad for you and whatever, but it works for us. Also, we both work in IT in a position where we are required to be on call for a week at a time for any production emergencies. This week just so happens to be my week on call, so as usual, I keep my work phone on vibrate on my nightstand overnight so if it rings it will wake me up, but not my fiance. I woke up probably 5 or 6 times last night thinking that my phone was ringing, and every time I looked at it nothing was happening. I didn?t know what was going on until that infernal commercial came on again while I was getting dressed this morning and it clicked.

Now I know some people find Flo grating and annoying, but I?ve never cared about her or Progressive that much one way or the other. After this commercial, though, I can say with certainty that Progressive will not be on the list anytime my fiance and I have future insurance needs. Interfering with my sleep is not something I take lightly!

Okay, so it?s not quite a candidate for the ?Worst Ad in America? tournament, but it?s pretty annoying.

Split testing met Google AdWords: hoe aan te pakken

Split testing in AdWords

Werken informatieve, of juist agressievere sitelinks beter?

London Markets: Europe weakness weighs on U.K. stocks

By Sara Sjolin, MarketWatch

LONDON (MarketWatch) ? U.K. stocks dropped on Wednesday, with the benchmark index tracking losses across Europe, after weak manufacturing data reminded investors of the region?s debt and growth issues.

The FTSE 100 index /quotes/zigman/3173262 UK:UKX +0.17% ?lost 0.3% to 5,782.88, adding to a 1.4% loss on Tuesday.

Politicizing the yuan

The yuan recently hit a 19-year high amid renewed cries for China to allow its currency to appreciate further. The WSJ's Mark Cranfield explains how politics may be influencing moves on China's currency.

Banks were among major decliners, with Lloyds Banking Group PLC /quotes/zigman/126322 UK:LLOY -0.65% ? /quotes/zigman/255656/quotes/nls/lyg LYG -2.31% ?down 1.8%, Barclays PLC /quotes/zigman/152323/quotes/nls/bcs BCS -1.72% ? /quotes/zigman/301787 UK:BARC -1.03% ?off 1.6% and Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC /quotes/zigman/10330253 UK:RBS -0.61% ? /quotes/zigman/530544/quotes/nls/rbs RBS -2.32% ?losing 1.6%.

Sentiment across Europe and the U.K. was hurt after October purchasing-managers-index readings for the euro zone and the closely watched German Ifo business-climate index proved weaker than expected.

The PMI reading for the euro zone dropped to a 40-month low of 45.8 from 46.1 in September. See: Euro extends slide on weak PMI, German Ifo data

Mining firms were also lower, even as most metals prices were higher. Vedanta Resources PLC /quotes/zigman/336962 UK:VED +1.07% ?gave up 1.1%, Rio Tinto PLC /quotes/zigman/155899 UK:RIO -0.13% ? /quotes/zigman/182541/quotes/nls/rio RIO -2.92% ? /quotes/zigman/176317 AU:RIO -0.97% ?fell 1.1% and BHP Billiton PLC /quotes/zigman/184879 UK:BLT +0.40% ? /quotes/zigman/270355/quotes/nls/bhp BHP -2.41% ? /quotes/zigman/180893 AU:BHP -1.38% ?lost 0.7%.

Oil firms, however, inched higher and found some support in encouraging data from China. The flash HSBC China manufacturing Purchasing Managers? Index rose to 49.1 in October, hitting a three-month high. See: China factory data add to ?soft landing? view

Royal Dutch Shell PLC /quotes/zigman/359955 UK:RDSB +0.99% ? /quotes/zigman/379012/quotes/nls/rds.b RDS.B -1.81% ?added 0.7%, BP PLC /quotes/zigman/210014 UK:BP +0.60% ? /quotes/zigman/247026/quotes/nls/bp BP -2.93% ?picked up 0.5% and BG Group PLC /quotes/zigman/249967 UK:BG +0.34% ?inched 0.2% higher.

Among other notable movers in London, advertising firm WPP PLC /quotes/zigman/526756 UK:WPP -0.98% ?fell 1% after UBS cut the stock to neutral from buy.

Pope ex-butler to be moved to jail cell in Vatican

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Paolo Gabriele, Pope Benedict's former butler who was convicted this month for stealing papal documents and leaking them to the media, will be moved from house arrest to a Vatican jail cell, the Vatican said on Thursday.

A statement said Gabriele would moved later on Thursday to the Vatican's police station to carry out the rest of his 18-month sentence.

The Vatican said the decision to end house arrest for Gabriele, who has been living with his family in their apartment in the Vatican, was taken after both the defense and the prosecution decided not to appeal the sentence.

It said Gabriele would still be able to appeal to the pope for a pardon, which would free him from jail.

But first he had to recognize the gravity of his crime and "make a sincere request for forgiveness from the Supreme Pontiff and those who were unjustly offended," the statement said.

Gabriele, who was responsible for the most serious security breach in recent Vatican history, was sentenced to 18 months on October 6.

The prosecution had asked for a three-year term but the court gave him a lighter sentence because he had no previous criminal record.

Gabriele, 46, who served the pope his meals and helped him dressed, leaked private documents to the media.

Some of them alleged corruption in the Vatican's business dealings with Italian companies and internal conflict over the running of the Vatican bank.

The Vatican has no jail as such but has cells in the police station inside the tiny city-state.
