The Mormon Church Was Racist Until 1978 & The Romney Double Standard

Posted by icarus on 23 Oct 2012 / 0 Comment

In case you?re curious ? everything that Andrew Sullivan refers to below is EXACTLY what the Mormon church stood for up to 1978. ?It is now referred to as the 1978 revelation wherein the church leadership say God no longer felt black people were cursed. ?Romney was born in 1947. ?When he was bullying kids and beating them up for being gay ? this is what he believed. ?When he was in Paris?proselytizing on behalf of his Church ?. this is what he believed. ?His church openly said blacks were inferior until 1978; Romney believed that until at least 1978.

For all of the questions about President Obama?s church ?.?how could Mitt Romney sit in his church for 31 years knowing what we know about Mormonism pre-1978? ?Did he suddenly change his mind in 1978 that blacks were no longer inferior ? 2nd class citizens in god?s eyes? ?This is a church that openly called inter-racial marriage ?repugnant?.

In fact ? they were as against interracial marriage back in the day as much as they are against gay marriage today.

Andrew Sullivan flips scenarios and asks if there isn?t a double standard ? he writes HERE; an excerpt:

Imagine for a moment that Barack Obama had never attended Jeremiah Wright?s church in Chicago and had decided to attend services, and proselytize for, a black separatist, nationalist church that refused to allow whites to participate in crucial religious services because white people had been condemned by God for their iniquity in the ancient past and had been for ever marked white so black Americans would know instantly to keep their distance. In fact, the definition of white in this black supremacist church was just one drop of white blood in a black person. It was Nazi-like in its racist precision and exclusion. Whites were denied the rites that made a person a full member of the church. Even blacks with a tiny strain of white DNA were kept from full participation.

Imagine further that backing this racist church was not a youthful folly on Obama?s part, but a profound commitment ? that he went on a mission abroad to convert Christians to a new religion based on black racial supremacy, and has often said that the most important thing in his entire life to this day is a church whose sacred scripture declares white people to be cursed by God for their past sins ? and the sign of this curse is their white skin.

A simple question: Do you think this issue would not come up in a general election or a primary? If Obama was subjected to news cycle after news cycle of clips of Obama?s actual former pastor, Jeremiah Wright, can you imagine the outrage if Obama had actually been a part of a black supremacist church ? that denied whites equal access to the sacraments ? for over a decade in his adult life?

This is a letter written by the Mormon church leadership in 1947 HERE:

?Dear Brother Nelson:

?. . . The basic element of your ideas and concepts seems to be that all God?s children stand in equal positions before Him in all things. Your knowledge of the Gospel will indicate to you that this is contrary to the very fundamentals of God?s dealings with Israel dating from the time of His promise to Abraham regarding Abraham?s seed and their position vis-a-vis God Himself. Indeed, some of God?s children were assinged to superior positions before the world was formed.

?We are aware that some Higher Critics do not accept this, but the Church does. Your position seems to lose sight of the revelations of the Lord touching the pre-existence of our spirits, the rebellion in heaven, and the doctrines that our birth into this life and the advantages under which we may be born, have a religionship in the life heretofore. From the days of the Prophet Joseph Smith even until now, it is has been the doctrine of the Church, never questioned by any of the Church leaders, that the Negroes are not entitled to the full blessings of the Gospel.

?Furthermore, your ideas, as we understand them, appear to contemplate the intermarriage of the Negro and White races, a concept which has heretofore been most repugnant to most normal-minded people from the ancient partiarchs till now. God?s rule for Israel, His Chosen People, has been endogamous [meaning 'marriage within a specific tribe or similar social unit']. Modern Israel has been similarly directed. We are not unmindful of the fact that there is a growing tendency, particularly among some educators, as it manifests itself in this are, toward the breaking down of race barriers in the matter of intermarriage between whites and blacks, but it does not have the sanction of the Church and is contrary to Church doctrine.

?Faithfully yours,

George Albert Smith
J. Reuben Clark, Jr.
David O. McKay?
