Trust in Chancellor Osborne hits record low: poll

The British public's trust in Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne has hit an all-time low, results of a new poll suggested Tuesday, as data showed the country's public sector debt soaring.

The poll, carried out by consultancy ComRes and ITV News, showed only 16 percent of the population trusted Osborne to see Britain through the current economic situation, while 62 percent did not trust him to do this.

This was the lowest trust score for Osborne recorded since polling began in October 2010, when 32 percent trusted him and 37 percent did not.

The tracker poll showed trust for Osborne had fallen steadily since the same question was asked in May, when 23 percent trusted him, and in July, when one in five (20 percent) had faith the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Official data released earlier Tuesday showed recession-hit Britain unexpectedly added to its public sector debt pile in July, dealing a blow to the government's hopes of reducing the country's large deficit.

Public sector net borrowing stood at ?600 million ($946 million, 763 million euros) in July compared with a net repayment of ?2.8 billion in the same month one year earlier.

The ComRes/ITV News poll showed just 31 percent of respondents trusted British Prime Minister David Cameron while more than half (53 percent) did not.

This was a marked fall from the 2010 poll, which showed Cameron with a trust score of 43 percent, with 36 percent who did not trust him to see the country through the current economic situation.

ComRes interviewed 2,060 adults online for the poll between August 17 and 19. The data was weighted to be demographically representative of all British adults.
